7. Policies and Measures for Sustainable Transportation Flashcards
What is SUMP? What are the main principles?
SUMP is a set of guidelines for understanding and developing urban mobility planning in an educated, rational and coordinated way
Main principles of a SUMP are:
1- Plan for sustainable urban mobility in the “functional urban area”
2- Cooperate across institutional boundaries which include all modes of transport
3- Involve citizens and stakeholders to increase acceptance through participation
4- Assess current and future performance
5- Define a long-term vision consistency in all planned measures
6- clear implementation plan
7- Develop all transport modes in an integrated manner
8- Monitoring and evaluation by continuous performance evaluation which helps early
recognition of problems
9- Assure quality
10-Setting up the planning process as a quality management cycle
What is Clean Air Plan?
It’s a plan to Decrease Emissions in the air through new policies for transportations
A) Federalandnationallevel
1- Enhancement of Euro 5 vehicles 2- Car renewal incentives
3- Strengthening of public transport 4- Fostering alternative motorization
B) Municipallevel
1- Master plan for clean air
2- Electric mobility (private and public transport)
3- Increasing public transport reliability
4- Digitalization of private and public transport
5- More capacity through express bus lines new subway and tram vehicles 6- Extend parking space management
7- Pooling/sharing schemes…
What are low emissions zones?
- Low Emission Zones according to German legislation are defined by (mostly urban area) in which only vehicles of a defined emission class can travel.
- The vehicles are divided in emission classes and identified by the color of windscreen stickers.
This led to decrease PM10 concentration levels.
What is the Mobility Pricing? And what are the aims of that?
It’s Application of pricing measures in designated areas and/or times in
• Flowing traffic • Parking • Public transport services • Freight services
Aims of mobility pricing:
• Generate funding for traffic infrastructure • Encourage shift in mode, route, time of journey • Remediate externalities
What is the ETM? What are the most common measures for ETM
Eco-sensitive traffic management, is a dynamically adjustable measures for peak emissions reduction which
Most Common Measures:
1- Speed limitations for harmonization of traffic
2- Adjustments in traffic signals to reduce number of stops 3- Routing measures to divert traffic volumes
4- Lane-rededication to increase capacity
5- Road closures
Explain the European Strategy for Low emissions mobility.
The strategy integrates a broader set of measures to support Europe’s transition to a low-carbon economy. Main elements of the strategy:
1- Increasing the efficiency of the transport system by making the most of digital technologies, smart pricing and further encouraging the shift to lower emission transport modes,
2- Speeding up the deployment of low-emission alternative energy for transport, such as advanced biofuels, electricity, hydrogen and renewable synthetic fuels and removing obstacles to the electrification of transport
3- Moving towards zero-emission vehicles. While further improvements to the internal combustion engine will be needed, Europe needs to accelerate the transition towards low- and zero-emission vehicles.
How can Fuel efficiency be analyzed?
Fuel efficiency can be analyzed under different categories:
1- Well-to-Tank (WTT): Fuel Production
2- Tank-to-Wheel (TTW): Vehicle Operation (e.g. Vehicle Use) 3- Well-to-Wheel (WTW): Fuel Production + Vehicle Use
