7: Oxidation and Reduction Flashcards
What is loss of electrons called?
Oxidation
What is gain of electrons called?
Reduction
What do oxidising agents do?
Oxidises other molecules by accepting electrons from them. The agent itself gets reduced.
What do reducing agents do?
Reduces other molecules by donating electrons to them. The agent itself gets oxidised.
What is a redox reaction?
Where reduction and oxidation occurs in the same reaction.
What do oxidation states tell us?
The total number of electrons an element has donated or accepted.
What is the oxidation state of an element?
0
What would the oxidation state of a simple monatomic ion be?
The same as its charge.
Which atom in a compound will have a negative oxidation state?
The most electronegative atom.
What will the oxidation state of oxygen in a peroxide be?
-1
What will the oxidation state of hydrogen in a metal hydride be?
-1
How can you form a redox equation from half equations?
Cancel out the electrons.
What molecules can we add into a complex half equation when balancing?
H+ and H2O
