7 - Kalanchoe blossfeldiana Flashcards
1
Q
Explain the potting of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana.
A
- Potted into 9cm pots when they are rooted, using a growing media (e.g. John Innes No.1)
- All pots and media must be sterile
- Plants should be graded and any damaged material removed
- The plant should be potted upright in the centre of the pot, to a level just above the top of the roots
- Firm in.
2
Q
Explain the repotting of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana. (e.g. into a 1L pot)
A
- Use John Innes No.2. or a multi-purpose growing media
- Repot once roots have filled the original pot
3
Q
Explain the watering of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana.
A
- If the pot is light when you lift it, or if the growing media has shrunk away from the sides, it’s time to water (it means the growing media is dry)
- Can be watered overhead or by capillary watering moderately during the growing season and just keeping it moist during winter.
4
Q
Explain the feeding of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana.
A
- Required to ensure the plant has adequate nutrients (e.g. NPK)
- Can be provided by inclusion of a compound controlled release fertiliser in the growing media or applied as a liquid feed through irrigation system.
5
Q
Name and explain the control of a pest that affects Kalanchoe blossfeldiana.
A
- Aphids or mealy bugs
- Can be controlled by the use of soft soap or good crop hygiene, providing optimal conditions for the plant.
