Setting
Where or when a story takes place.
Protagonist
The leading character in a novel.
Plot
The events (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution) in a story.
Antagonist
The opposing force that brings conflict to the protagonist.
Complications
The struggle between opposing forces. This drives the story.
Exposition
The first part of the plot. Characters, setting, and basic situation are revealed.
Inciting Incident
The event that sets the story in motion. Makes the rest of the story possible.
Rising Action
Main part of the story. Moves the plot along. Where complications arise.
Climax
The most exciting or intense part of the story for the protagonist. Usually a turning point.
Falling Action
Events that follow the climax and lead to the resolution. Conflicts begin moving towards resolution.
Resolution
The end of the story. Loose ends of the plot are tied up (sometimes). Remaining questions are answered (sometimes). Conflicts are resolved (some of the conflicts but new ones pop up).

Hints or clues suggesting what may happen in the story.

The anxiety a reader feels about what may happen next in a story.
Flashback
Interrupting the plot of the story to recreate an inciting incident from a earlier time.
