6th Grade Math Vocabulary - Post-Test Flashcards
Volume
the amount of space occupied by a three dimensional
Variable
a quantity that can change
Composite Number
a whole number with factors OTHER THAN itself and one
-opposite of a prime number
Prime Number
a whole number with exactly two factors - one and itself
-opposite of a composite number
Factor
one OF two whole numbers that are multiplied to get a product
16: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16
Multiple
the PRODUCT of a given whole number and another whole number
3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21…
Rational Number
any number that can be written as the quotient of an integer and a non-zero number
-any number that can be written as a fraction
-Remember the fraction bar equals division
Dividend
the name for the NUMBER into which YOU ARE DIVIDING in a division problem
-the number being divided
Divisor
the name for the NUMBER BY WHICH YOU ARE DIVIDING in a division problem
-the number you are dividing by
REPEATING Decimal
a decimal with a pattern of a fixed numbe of digits that REPEATS forever
TERMINATING Decimal
a decimal that ENDS
Coefficient
-the numerical factor in any term of an expression
-a number that is multiplied by a variable
DEPENDENT Variable
a variable whose value is DEPENDENT on the other variable
-can change; is not constant
INDEPENDENT Variable
a variable USED TO DETERMINE the value of the other variable
-it doesn’t change; is constant
Expression
a mathematical phrase containing numbers, variables, and operation symbols
-does NOT have an equal sign
Example: 3x + 1
Rate of Change
the amount of CHANGE in the dependent variable produced by a given change in the independent variable
-a rate that describes how one quantity CHANGES in relation to another quantity
Surface Area
the AREA required to cover a three-dimensional space
Term
a number, a variable, or the product of a number and a variable
Example: In the expression 3x + 1, the 3x is a term and 1 is a term
Ratio
a comparison of two quantities
Example: I have 3 apples and 4 oranges. The ratio of apples to oranges is 3:4. I’ve compared the two quantities
Absolute Value
a number’s distance from 0 on the number line
Percent
a fraction in which the denominator is 100
Example: 25% = 0.25 = 25/100
Quotient
the answer to a division problem
Coordinate PAIR
an ordered PAIR of numbers used to locate a point on a COORDINATE grid
Example: coordinate pair (2, 3) plotted on a graph where x-axis = 2 and y-axis = 3
Equation
a rule containing variables that represent a mathematical relationship
-has an equal sign =
Example: 4x + 3 = 11
Scale
a labeling scheme used on each of the axes on a coordinate grid
- the units labeled and used on the x-axis and y-axis forming a number line
-represents the range, for example the y-axis goes from -20 to 20
X-axis
the number line that is horizontal (left to right) on a coordinate grid
Y-axis
the number line that is vertical (up and down) on a coordinate grid
Area
the measure of the amount of surface enclosed by the boundary of a figure
-Length of the figure multiplied by the width of the figure
-Length x Width = Area
Perimeter
the measure of the distance AROUND a two-dimensional figure
-Add together the lengths of each side of the figure
Perpendicular Lines
LINES that meet at a right angle
Example: Lines that meet at the corner of a square
