6B Flashcards
Antigen
- Located on surface of cells
- Immune system is able to recognize specific pathogens due to presence of antigens on their cell surface and stimulate immune response in the body
Non-specific response
Response to pathogen infections involving use of several WBC and plasma proteins
Specific response
Specific glycoproteins (antigen) recognized by leukocytes
Non-specific response
1) Inflammation
2) Fever
3) Phagocytosis
4) Lysozyme action
5) Interferons
Inflammation
= area of wound become swollen, warm, painful, redness
- Body cells (mast cells) respond to tissue damage by secreting molecules ; histamine
Histamine stimulates
1) Vasodilation
- Widening of diameter of arteries due to relaxation of smooth muscle in blood vessel walls
- Increase blood flow through capillaries
2) Capillary wallls
- Become Leakey / more permeable ; allow fluid to enter tissues and create swelling
- Some plasma containing leukocytes / antibodies forced out of capillaries
3) Phagocytes leave blood / enter tissue to engulf foreign particles
4) Release cytokines
