6A - Responses in plants and animals Flashcards
What factors do plants respond to?
Gravity and light.
How do plants respond to stimuli?
- Sense the direction of light and grow towards it to maximise light absorption for photosynthesis.
- Sense gravity, so their roots and shoots grow in the right direction.
- Climbing plants have a sense of touch, so they can find things to climb up and reach the sunlight.
What is a tropism?
A plant’s growth response to an external (directional) stimulus.
What is a positive tropism?
Growth towards the stimulus.
What is a negative tropism?
Growth away from the stimulus.
What is phototropism?
The growth of a plant in response to light.
How do shoots respond to light?
They are positively phototropic and grow towards light.
How do roots respond to light?
They are negatively phototropic and grow away from light.
Why do shoots grow towards light?
For photosynthesis - light energy for growth.
Why do roots grow away from light?
For nutrients/water for photosynthesis.
What is it called when shoots grow towards light?
Positive phototropism.
What is it called when roots grow away from light?
Negative phototropism.
What is gravitropism?
The growth of a plant in response to gravity.
How do shoots respond to gravity?
They are negatively gravitropic and grow upwards.
How do roots respond to gravity?
They are positively gravitropic and grow downwards.
Why do shoots grow away from gravity?
High - get light for photosynthesis.
Why do roots grow towards gravity?
Water for photosynthesis.
What is it called when shoots grow away from gravity?
Negative gravitropism.
What is it called when roots grow towards gravity?
Positive gravitropism.
