6A Nervous Communication Flashcards
How do animals increase their chances of survival
by responding to changes in the environment both internally and externally
Define stimulus
Any change to the internal or external environment
Define receptor
Cells or proteins that detect different stimuli
Define effector
a muscle or gland that produces an effect to the stimuli
How is information sent in the nervous system
via electrical impulses
What does the sensory neurone do
transmits electrical impulses from receptors to the CNS
What is the central nervous system made up of
the brain and spinal cord
What do motor neurones do
transmit electrical impulses from the CNS to the effector
What do relay neurones do
transmit electricals between sensory neurones and motor neurones
Nervous communication pathway
Stimulus -> receptors -> CNS -> effectors -> response
Define reflex
when the body responds to a stimulus without making a conscious decision to respond
How quick are reflexes
Rapid automatic responses
How quick is nervous communication
slower than reflexes, localised and short lived
What are neurotransmitters Chemical
Chemicals that diffuse through neurons
