  • JCV infects oligodendrocytes, astrocytes (lytic infection, myelin destruction)
  • sxs usu subacute but incl discoordination, gait imbalance, cognitive dysfunction, vision probs
  • occurs in immunosuppressed (HIV, cancer, transplant, mAB tx)

  • primary infection usu asymptomatic
  • disease in immunocompromised
  • JCV = progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) – CNS disease
  • BKV = polyomavirus-assoc nephropathy (renal transplant), uretal stenosis & hemorrhagic cystitis – transplant patients
