6.6c Flashcards
carbon capture
capturing carbon released by burning fossil fuels and burying it deep underground.
cons of carbon capture
it is expensive because of the complex tech involved. Also some uncertainty over whether that carbon will stay trapped underground or will slowly leak into the atmosphere long term, areas it is stored could be dangerous
pros of carbon capture
other pollutants removed at the same time, reduce emissions at the source
hydrogen fuel cells
combine H2 and O2 to produce electricity, heat and water. they produce electricity for as long as H is supplied and not lose their charge.
pros of H fuel cells
renewable and readily available,
h is clean and carbon free,
almost zero emissions and less C footprint,
no noise/visual pollution
cons of h fuel cells
H extraction is dangerous, expensive and difficult- defeats the purpose
highly flammable
high cost
hard to store H2
high cost of raw materials
hard to find source - not a naturally occurring gas
electrolysis of water requires electricity
