6.6.1 What Determinds Population Size Flashcards
What is carrying capacity?
Maximum pop
The maximum population size maintained over a period in a particular habitat
When drawing a graph of population size and carrying capacity overtime, what does A, B and C represent?
Reproduction, growth,
resources, population size
Mortality.
A: lag phase (are reproduction is slow growth is slow)
B: log phase. (resources are plentiful. Population size increases, rates of reproduction increases.)
C: stationary phase (population size reaches current capacity rates of reproduction and mortality are equal)
What are limiting factors? 4
•Change of temperatures
•Resources: food, water, light, oxygen, nesting sites
•Predator
•Parasites/diseases
What are the types of strategies?
R-strategies
K-strategies
And which strategy are used by larger mammals, such as humans, elephants and larger plants?
K-strategies
Kk- human text
What strategy is used by infects, spiders and weed?
What do they have in common?
R-strategies
They reproduce rapidly
What are the characteristics of K-strategies? 5
Low reproduction rate
Slow development
Late reproduction rate
Long lifespan
Large body mass
Characteristics of R-strategies? 5
High reproduction rate
Quick development
Young reproduction rate
Short life span
Small body mass
What is the ‘boom’ and ‘burst’ referring to?
Reproduction
Cc
Resources
‘Boom’ - when the population size increase (reproductive rate)
‘Burst’ - once pop exceeds carrying capacity no enough resources to allow individuals to reproduce so they decline
