6.4 - Hydrogen Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
Define hydrogen bond.
A
Type of permanent dipole-dipole interaction where the bond is between the lone pair on the electronegative atom and the hydrogen atom
2
Q
What are the requirements for a hydrogen bond?
A
- An electronegative atom with a long pair (ATOMS O, N or F)
- Hydrogen atom attached to the electronegative atom.
3
Q
What are some anomalous properties of water?
A
- Ice is less dense than water as the hydrogen bonds hold the water molecules further apart
- Creates an open lattice structure
- BP and MP is high in water as more energy is required to break the hydrogen bonds
4
Q
What are the benefits of ice being less dense than water?
A
Ice is an insulating layer, prevents water from freezing and damaging wildlife - Habitat for some animals
