Anxiety:
A level of nerves and irrational thinking.
Competitive trait anxiety
A disposition to suffer from nervousness in most sporting situations. When a player feels nerves before all matches, it’s consistent and happened all the time.
Competitive state anxiety
A nervous response to specific sporting situations. A temporary response that can vary depending on how important the situations are.
Link between state and trait
An individual with high trait anxiety is more likely to experience high state anxiety when faced with stressful situations, especially if it is felt that others are watching and evaluating performance.
Somatic anxiety:
A physiological response to a threat such as increased heart rate.
