6.2 Flashcards
What did Ernest Rutherford do in 1911
Rutherford carried out the ‘gold foil’
experiment.
Gold foil experiment
Experiment where Rutherford set up a thin layer of gold and fired a stream of
radioactive particles at it
What was discovered as a result of the gold foil experiment
Most particles passed straight through the gold foil
with little deflection.
Few particles bounced straight back in the direction
that they had come from.
What must gold atoms have/contain
Gold atoms must contain a lot of space,
with a small part of the atom containing a positive charge
known as the nucleus of the atom.
What is found in the nucleus
protons and neutrons
What orbits around the nucleus
electrons
What kind of charge do atoms have
no charge(neutral)
Atomic number
Number of protons in the nucleus of the atom
Mass number
the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus
What is the main difference between John Dalton’s model of the atom and the models of Thomson, Rutherford and Bohr?
Dalton’s model of the atom assumed that atoms were solid masses
while the models of Thomson, Rutherford and Bohr described the atom as being made up of smaller charged particles.
How large is an atom
1/20,000 of the diameter of the finest human hair
Nucleus size
1/100, 000 of the diameter of an atom
