6.1.1 mutations and variation Flashcards
define mutation
a change in the DNA base sequence of an organism
what are the 2 types of mutations?
- chromosomal
- gene
what are chromosome mutations?
change in the number or structure of whole chromosomes
what are gene mutations?
change to the sequence of nucleotides in DNA molecules
what happens to mutations that occur during the formation of gametes?
the mutations will be passed onto the next generation
what are the 2 types of gene mutations?
point and indel
what is a point mutation?
where one base is substituted for another
what are the 3 types of point mutations?
- nonsense
- mis-sense
- silent
what is a nonsense point mutation?
the change results in a stop codon
what is a mis-sense point mutation?
a different amino acid is coded for
what is a silent point mutation?
a different base occurs in the triplet but the same amino acid is coded for
what are indel mutations?
an extra base is added or deleted leading to a frameshift
what is a mutagen?
a chemical, physical or biological agent which causes a mutation
give examples of some mutagens?
ionising radiation, chemicals etc
what is a neutral mutation?
it has no effect on the organism
