6.1 Geologic Natural Disasters Flashcards
Hypocenter vs Epicenter
Earthquakes occur underground at the point called the focus/hypocenter. This is the point where the stored elastic potential energy is released due to a fault rupture. The point on the surface above the hypocenter is called the epicenter.
Volcano/ Magma (rock type)/ Earthquake strength at DIVERGENT boundaries
Effusive/ Mafic (Basalt/ Gabbro)/ Weak
Volcano/ Magma (rock type)/ Earthquake strength at SUBDUCTION ZONES
Explosive/ semi-mafic (andesite/diorite)/ deep/strong
Volcano/ Magma (rock type)/ Earthquake strength at CONTINENTAL CONVERGENT boundaries
No volcanoes, Surface, strong earthquakes
Volcano/ Magma (rock type)/ Earthquake strength at TRANSFORM boundaries
No volcanoes, surface strong earthquakes
Volcano/ Magma (rock type)/ Earthquake strength at INTRAPLATE boundaries
Hotspot, various magma types, occasional and weak earthquakes
