the arrangement of the work; the relationship of the parts of a work to the whole; the logical divisions of a work. the most common units of structures are
- play: scenes and acts
- novel: chapters
- poetry: lines and stanzas
style
the characteristic manner of expression of an author’s work
- diction, syntax, figurative language, imagery, selection of detail, sound effects, tone
symbol
something that simultaneously itself and also represents an idea
- winter and darkness symbolize death
synaesthesia
the concurrent response of two or more of the senses to the stimulation of one. one kind of sensation is used to describe another
- “blue note”
- “how sweet the sound”
- “a cool green”
synecdoche
a figure of speech in which a part signifies the whole. the part is usually a key component and not an insignificant part.
- “nice threads” meaning clothes
- “cool wheels” meaning car
tetrameter
a line of four feet (8 syllables)
theme
the main thought expressed by a work. topic and theme statement are not the same. theme is looking for what the author is saying about the topic. themes are universal to the common human experience. a theme statement will not include details and events from a piece of literature but rather focus on the ideas suggested by those events.
- love is the topic but what the author is suggesting about love would be the theme statement
tone
the manner in which an author expresses his or her attitude; the intonation of the voice that expresses meaning. tone is described by adjectives, and often a single adjective will not be enough to adequately describe the speaker’s or author’s tone. the one can also change and develop through a passage.
syntax
the structure of a sentence; the arrangement of words in a sentence. a discussion of syntax in your essay could include such considerations as the length or brevity of sentences.
- the kinds of sentences: questions, exclamations, declarative sentences, rhetorical questions
- or: periodic/loose, simple, compound, complex
understatement
a device where the literal sense of what is being said falls short of the magnitude of the situation
