6 The Rate and Extent of Chemical Change Flashcards
Rate of reaction equation
amount of reactant used 𝗼𝗿 product formed

time
How can you find the rate of reaction?
- By measuring the amount of reactants used
- Measuring the amount of products formed
- Measuring the time it takes for a reaction mixture to become opaque or change colour

What are key things to remember?
- The steeper the line the faster the reaction
- When a reaction stops the lines becomes horizontal (one of the reactants have been used up)
- Same amount of product is formed from the same amount of reactants, regardless of rate
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being used up in the process.
Reversible reaction
Products can react to produce the original reactants:
A(g) + B(g) ⇌ C(g) + D(g)
So, C and D can react to produce A and B and vice versa.
In a ______ ______, no _________ are added and no products are _______.
1) closed system
2) reactants
3) removed
When a reversible reaction occurs in a closed system, an ___________ is achieved when the rate of the _______ reaction is _____ to the rate of the _______ reaction.
1) equilibrium
2) forward
3) equal
4) backward
