6 spinal cord and ascending tracts Flashcards
Where is the grey matter located in the spinal cord?
Centrally
posterior horn of grey matter?
Sensory
intermediate horn of grey matter?
Autonomic
anterior horn of grey matter?
Motor
Where is the spinal white matter located?
Peripherally
posterior columns of spinal white matter?
sensory
lateral column of spinal white matter?
mixed motor and sensory
anterior column of spinal white matter?
mixed
what is the name given to the bundle of nerve fibres crossing the midline of the spinal cord?
white commissure
what is the difference between white and grey matter?
grey matter contains cell bodies, dendrites and axon terminals
white matter is just the axons connecting the grey matter together
does the motor root have a ganglion?
no. dorsal root ganglion is only found on sensory/dorsal root
How many segments is the spinal made up of?
31 segments; 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, 1 coccygeal
Where are the names given to the two spinal cord bulges?
cervical (arm/hand innervation) and lumbar (leg/foot innervation)
How does white matter change up the spinal cord?
increases (accumulated neuronal traffic to and from the brain)
How does grey matter change up the spinal cord?
Change is minimal except at bulges; v substantial
Why are roots long at cord end?
Spine grows faster than cord during development therefore lower segments are much higher than their level of exit
What is the cauda equina?
Collection of nerves in the vertebral canal (occurs as no spinal cord- only sensory and motor routes
How can CSF be sample?
LUMBAR PUNCTURE; csf sample from sub arachnoid space well below L2.. usually L4/5
What does each spinal root contain?
nerve fibre along with an artery and vein
What are the 2 pathways to the cerebral cortex?
Dorsal column
Anterolateral
What do the 2 pathways to the cerebral cortex have in common?
3 neurons
Relay in thalamus
Cross over to opposite side of brain
