6. Skin diseases - Miliary dermatitis, Eosinophilic complex Flashcards
What is miliary dermatitis?
A multifactorial disease of cats
What is important to remember about miliary dermatitis?
It is a CLINICAL SIGN, not a disease or diagnose
What is reason for development of miliary dermatitis?
It is developed (manifested) due to an underlying pruritic skin disease
What is etiology of miliary dermatitis?
(Cause of development)
- Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) - most common
- Atopic dermatitis and food allergy (hypersensitivity dermatitis)
- Ectoparasites - Cheyletiellosis, trombiculidiasis, pediculosis, notoedres, Otodectes.
- Dermatophytosis and bacterial folliculitis - least common
What are clinical signs characterizing for miliary dermatitis?
Papulocrustous lesions of skin - widespread small crusty papules
What are clinical signs of miliary dermatitis?
- Crusty papules on dorsal neck, trunk, ears and above tail (feel like small millet seeds) –> intense pruritus esp from lesions on neck
- Perioral, periocular and periauricular erythema, crusting and self-induced alopecia always.
What is important to have in mind when evaluating facial lesions and clinical signs of suspected miliary dermatitis?
That the facial lesions are sometimes associated with clinical signs of eosinophilic granuloma complex
What is eosinophilic granuloma complex?
A term to describe 3 forms of skin lesions in cats
- Indolent ulcers
- Eosinophilic plaque
- Eosinophilic granuloma
