6 - Simple responses Flashcards
1
Q
Taxis definition
A
Directional movement towards/away from a stimulus
2
Q
Kinesis definition
A
Non-directional movement towards/away from a stimulus
3
Q
Importance of taxis/kinesis
A
Increases chance of survival:
- Towards light - food - more energy and reproduction + find a mate so more likely to reproduce
- Away from a light - hide from predators + remain in moist conditions to prevent dehydration- water is needed for hydrolysis reactions - forming cytoplasm
4
Q
IAA
A
- Made in cells of shoot and root tips
- Stimulates cell elongation in shoots
- Inhibits cell elongation in roots
5
Q
Tropism
A
- Directional growth towards/away from a stimulus
1-Tip 2-Dffusion 3-Side/Conc 4- stim-Cell elong
6
Q
Advantage of shoots growing towards light
A
- More light absorbed for photosynthesis - more glucose made for making starch, cellulose for cell walls and for respiration resulting in more ATP for mitosis/growth
7
Q
Advantage of roots growing towards gravity
A
- More water absorbed - more photosynthesis- more glucose - more respiration- more ATP made for growth
-Nitrates used to make proteins - ATP for energy release/ respiration/ growth - DNA for DNA replication -RNA for protein synthesis- increases growth - Phosphates - phospholipids for cell membrane- ATP for energy release/ respiration/ growth - DNA for DNA replication -RNA for protein synthesis- increases growth
