Threats from the United States
British North America was very large, and its system of defence was inadequate for its size. This made the colonies and territories an easy target if the Americans decided to push north across the border.

Need for new Markets
Recall from Chapter 1 that the United States cancelled the Reciprocity Treaty with Britain in 1865. This hada negative impact on the economy of the colonies. As a result, they were
