6. Probability distributions Flashcards
What is a random Variable?
A variable whos value depends on the outcome of a random event.
What is a sample space
The range of values for the random value
What is a discrete variable?
A variable is discrete if it can only take a certain numerical value?
what are the ways to illustrate probability distributions for discrete data?
A probability mass functions
A table
A graph
What is a probability distribution?
probability distribution describes the probability of any outcome in the sample space.
What is discrete uniform distribution?
This is where all the probabilities outcomes are the same.
When can you model X with a binomial distribution B(n,p) ?
if :
- There are a fixed number of trials, n
- There are two possible outcomes (success and failure).
- There is a fixed probability of success, p
The trials are independent with each other
