6 principles of NCS Flashcards
Social Mixing
NCS provides young people with an opportunity to meet, make friends with and work alongside people from different schools and backgrounds in their community. This broadens their outlook and increases their understanding of the local area.
Challenge
Young people take part in a range of physically and mentally challenging activities. These activities take them out of their comfort zones, develop their strength of character and provide a series of shared experiences.
Increased Responsibility and Independance
We want NCS to be a real journey for young people. This means handing over more responsibility to participants as the programme unfolds. This develops their leadership skills, confidence and other qualities which employers have told us are important to them when recruiting.
Reflection
Guided reflection is a core element of the NCS programme and as such, you are instrumental in delivering this. By encouraging young people to reflect, you can support them to learn from their experiences and become more resilient, confident and effective in their decision making and when forging relationships.
Social Action
NCS encourages young people to connect with and get involved in their communities. They learn to understand community issues and design and deliver projects which make a difference. Through this social action, young people discover what it feels like to give something back to their community. At the same time, they develop valuable skills that are so important for future employment.
Inspiration
We want young people to continue to flourish long after finishing their NCS journey. It is critical that we encourage and inspire them to continue their NCS journey with further mixing and social action in their community, as well as the achievement of personal goals.
