Popular Sovereignty & republicanism
power is divided by the state and national (federal) government. National gov: issues that affect country as a whole. State gov: act on local matters.
Federalism
protects the rights of individuals from government overreach. (bill of rights), freedom of speech, religion, press, arms.
Individual Rights
a system that divides power and prevents any single government institution from becoming too powerful
Separation of Powers
essential to democracy; limits power of national government; specifies powers of the gov, and things they are prohibited from doing as well.
Limited Government
the three separate branches: legislative, judicial, and executive. Each branch exercises some control over the other two.
