6 Prejudice : Realistic Conflict Theory Flashcards
What are the components of RTC? RCT
- Intergroup Competition
- Negative Interdependence
- Limited Resources
- Positive Interdependence and Superordinate Goals
What is intergroup competition? RCT
Intergroup competition (Sherif 1966) states that prejudice and hostility will intensify when two or more groups strive for the same goal.
What is negative Interdependence? RCT
Negative Interdependence happens when two groups seek to achieve a goal that only one of them can have (like a sports trophy)
What is limited resources? RCT
Limited resources are when groups compete for resources that are scarce. This can be physical things like food or land, and it can also be symbolic, like authority and power.
What is Positive interdependence and Superordinate Goals? RCT
Positive interdependence and superordinate goals are used to reduce prejudice. Sherif argued that prejudice arising from Intergroup conflict can be reduced through groups working cooperatively to achieve a common goal.
- Positive interdependence : when neither groups can reach their goal unless the other group reaches theirs too. - Superordinate goals : goals that can only be achieved through coordination.
