6. Non-Surgical Retreatment Flashcards
What is non-surgical retreatment in endodontics?
It is a procedure to remove root canal filing material from the tooth, followed by cleaning, shaping and obturating the canal
What are the contraindications for non-surgical retreatment?
The contraindications can be classified as general, restorative or endodontic in nature
General: Patient factors such as uncooperative patients and poor oral hygiene
Restorative: Poor restorative prognosis and periodontally compromised teeth
Endodontic: Thin canal walls with risk of lateral perforations, presence of posts or separated instruments that cannot be removed, severe apical curvatures, apical perforations, root fractures
What are some factors that affect the treatment outcome of endodontic treatment?
- Presence of apical pathosis
- Bacterial status of canal prior to obturation
- Extent and quality of obturation: obturating more than 2mm short of the apex will lead to lowers success. The lack of 3-dimensional filling also lowers success
- Quality of the coronal restoration: Poor seal lowers success
How can Gutta Percha be removed from a tooth?
- Using Files or Paper points with solvents (chloroform)
- Files and heat
- Heat removal using system B
- Ultrasonic removal
- Rotary Niti Instrument removal
