What are ethics
Ethics are concerned with the right or wrong way of behaving
What are the key ethical issues when conducting sociological research
- Safeguarding the interests of those involved
- Research should be worthwhile
- The techniques used should be appropriate
How does safeguarding take place
- Consent
- Avoiding deception
- Confidentiality and anonymity
- Sensitivity
- Avoiding causing harm
What is consent
The respondents should give permission for the research to take place on them.
This consent should be informed and they should know the aims and risks of the research.
Consent can be withdrawn at anytime.
What is deception
If the subjects are are unaware or have been misled about the researches aims they have been deceived. Covert observation is in breach of this rule and is therefore controversial.
What is anonymity
The subjects identity shouldnt be revealed, this encourages people to be open and honest.
What is confidentiality
This refers to protecting the information that is collected and not letting others who dont have authorisation of the research see the information
What is sensitivity
All subjects that can be seen as sensitive Eg; family, health must be handled gently and sensitvely.
What is avoiding harm
Those who take part in the research must not be disadvantaged as a result of the research.
