6 - Electrolysis Flashcards
1
Q
What is electrolysis?
A
Using an electric current to break down ionic compounds (an electrolyte)
2
Q
How does electrolysis work?
A
- Dip two electrodes into a melted/dissolved electrolyte solution
- Connect the anode to the positive terminal and the cathode to the negative terminal of a power supply
- Positive ions move to the cathode while negative ions move to the anode
- Ions lose charge and become elements at the electrodes, gases & metals are deposited there
3
Q
What is the order of discharge at the anode?
A
- Halides
- Hydroxides
- All others
4
Q
What is the order of discharge at the cathode?
A
The least reactive goes first
5
Q
What is aluminium used for?
A
- Aeroplanes
- Cans
- Overhead power cables
- Foil
- Bike frames & car bodies
6
Q
How do you separate aluminium from bauxite?
A
- Melt aluminium oxide with molten cryolite to lower the melting point
- Electrolyse at 850 C to produce molten aluminium & oxygen
7
Q
Zinc chloride (l) > ?
A
Zinc (s) + chlorine (g)
8
Q
Copper (II) bromide (aq) > ?
A
Copper (s) + bromine (aq)
9
Q
Lead bromide (l) > ?
A
Lead (s) + bromine (g)
10
Q
Aluminium oxide (l) > ?
A
Aluminium (l) + oxygen (g)
11
Q
Sodium chloride solution (aq) > ?
A
Hydrogen (g) + chlorine (g) + sodium hydroxide solution (aq)
