Rubeola
Measles
Droplet contact
Highly communicable
Fever, conjunctivitis, coryza, cough, Koplik spots
Red blotchy rash day 3-7
Starts on face, then trunk/arms
Sometimes desquamates
Vit A deficiency = high risk
Communicable just before sxs and 4 days after appearance of rash
Rubella
Milder dz
Diffuse, punctate, maculopapular rash
Children are fine
Adults get more sick - low-grade fever, HA, malaise, conjunctivitis, mild coryza
Postauricular, occipital, and posterior cervical lymphadenopathy
Forscheimer spots (palate)
Bad for fetus - at birth, you’ll know - can look like exanthem, tho
ELISA - rubella-specific IgM - four-fold rise in Ab titer
CSF in newborn
Communicable - 1 week before onset, four days after rash
Do NOT immunize preggos
