- canoes = cedar; different canoes for different situations
Food:
- fished, hunt sea mammals, berries, seaweed, plants, camas roots, deer, elk, smoked halibut
Shelter:
- longhouses - cedar planks, located along ocean because with door outwards
Non-Native-Contact:
- 1700s: disease brought by Americans + Europeans –> smallpox + other diseases –> 2/3 died
- 1855: signed Treaty of Neah –> kept land + fishing rights; gave away 300,000 acres
Spokane
Clothes/Transportation:
- moccasins, feathered bonnets, porcupine quilts (decor), beads, painted/dyed clothing
- by foot/canoes/horses (1800s)
Food/Tools:
- salmon, elk, deer, antelope, fish
- bow and arrow = important weapon
- water tools, canoes, spears, traps, nets, land tools, short spear, snow shoes used to hunt
Shelter/Religion:
- teepees, mats, lodges
- beliefs: animals gave lives so humans lived
Non-Native-Contact:
- American claimed land –> Americans left because of smallpox + diseases
- tribe relocated
Walla Walla
Clothes/Transportation:
- animal skin, moccassins, cornhusk nats, leggings, elk teeth, elk skin coats, fringe skirts (men)
- horses = travel long distances
Food:
- salmon, elk, deer, berries, roots: winter –> dried + stored
Shelter:
- longhouses, traveled place to place
Non-Native-Contact:
- Lewis + Clark wrote about how they met in 1806 with tribes
- signed treaty with US government –> gave up 6.4 miles of land
Quileute
Clothes:
- hats = trees –> cone = protect from rain, skirts, wove baskets
Food:
- salmon, rocks, roots, berries, seals, dolphins
Shelter:
- big cedar houses - totem poles decor
- group houses in winter
Non-Native-Contact:
- 1855: contract + signed treaty with US government
- 1889: reservation built, but wouldn’t leave homeland
