Alliteration
the repetition of the same beginning sound in a group of words Ex: The big bad bear bored the bunnies by the bush
Antonym
a word that means the opposite of another word Ex: low-high, short-tall, pretty-ugly, soft-hard
Assonance
the repetition of a vowel sound in a group of words Ex: peter piper pick a peck of pickled peppers
Author’s purpose
the reason that the author wrote a text and made decisions about including and organizing information and details
Central idea
also called thesis, the main or most important idea in a text
Chronological orgnaization
an organizational pattern in which the author follows the order of time
Climax
the moment of big conflict in a story where a character is forced to action
Compare/Contrast
an organizational pattern in which the author compares similarities and/or differences of one or more objects or ideas
Conclusion
a judgement or decision based on reason and evidence
Context clues
clues in a text that help you figure out the meaning of a word
Dialogue
words spoken between characters in a story or play
Evidence
information in a text that supports an infernece
Figurative language
language that is not literal, such as metaphor, simile, and personification
Imagery
language that creates a mental picture
Inference
the conclusion that readers may draw using details or evidence from a text and what they already know
