5th Grade Math Flashcards
Circle Graph
A graph shaped like a circle. The circle represents the whole set of data and the sections are divided into parts to show the parts of a set of data.
Scatterplot
A graph made by plotting ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.
Line Graph
A graph in which data points are connected by line segments. They often show a change over time.
Ratio
A comparison by division of two quantities.
Volume
The measure of the amount of space a
3-dimensional shape takes up.
Expression
A group of symbols that represents a number. Does not include =, <
Unit to measure volume
Cubic
Outcome
Result of a probability experiment
Probability
Chance
Prism
A polyhedron with two parallel faces, called bases that are the same size and same shape.
Double bar graph
A bar graph that breaks data into multiple categories.
diameter
A line segment that passes through the center of a circle or sphere and has endpoints on the circle or sphere.
Isosceles Triangle
A triangle with two equal sides

Parallel Lines
Lines that never cross
Equation
A number sentence that contains an equal sign.
Percentage
Part of a whole
Congruent
Same shape, Same size
Value
What something equals, often a variable
Median
The middle number in a set of data when the data are listed in order from smallest to largest.
Coordinate Plane
The plane (extending forever) that contains the “x” axis and “y” axis.
Net
A 2-d pattern of a 3-d object that can be folded to create the figure
Solid Figure
3-D shapes that have width, length, and height
Pattern
A set of numbers or objects that are related by a specific rule
Degrees
The unit to measure angles
Input
The number you put in to get the output
Output
The number you get out as a result of putting in the input
Reference
Something you look at to help you
Estimate
A good guess that is close to the actual number
Square root
The square root of a number n is a number when multiplied by itself gives n.
Interior
The inside of a closed 2-d or 3-d figure.
Prediction
An educated guess based on what you know so far.
Experimental Probability
What actually happens during an experiment
Theoretical Probability
What you think will happen
Skew Lines
Can’t intersect because they are not on the same plane.
Intersecting Lines
Lines that cross but do not form 90 degree angles.
Perpendicular Lines
Lines that cross but form 90 degree angles.
Inequality
A number sentence with , or =
Surface Area
The total area of the surface of a
3-dimensional object.
Commutative Property
A property of addition and multiplication that says that changing the order of the numbers being added or multiplied does not change the answer.
Associative Property
A property of addition and multiplication that says when you add or multiply three numbers it does not matter which two you add or multiply first.
Distributive Property
A property that relates multiplication and addition or subtraction. This property gets its name because it distributes a factor over terms inside parentheses.
Identity Property
This property of addition and multiplication says that the sum of zero and any other number or variable is the number or variable itself.
Variable
A letter or other symbol that represents a number.
Inverse Property
Says when a number is combined with its inverse then it is equal to its identity.
Perfect Square
A number that has a whole number as its square root
Vertex (vertices)
The point where the sides of an angle, polygon, or edges of a polyhedron meet.
Exterior Angle
An angle between any side of a shape and a line extended from the next side.
Quadrilateral
A 4-sided polygon
Radius
A line segment from the center of a circle or sphere to any point on the circle of sphere.
Circumference
The distance around a circle; the perimeter of a circle.
Justify
To prove
Simplest Form
An equivalent fraction with a smaller numerator and a smaller denominator.
Improper Fraction
A fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator.
Mixed Number
A number that is written using both a whole number and a fraction.
Numerator
The top number of a fraction. “The part”
Denominator
The bottom number of a fraction. “The whole”
Frequency Table
A table that lists items using tally marks to record the number of times they occur.
Mean
The average of a set of data. Add all the numbers up and divide by the number of numbers you added together.
Range
The maximum - the minimum
Mode
The number that occurs the most often
Order of Operations

Coordinate Grid
A rectangular coordinate grid is used to name points in a plane.
Axis
A reference line drawn on a graph (you can measure from it to find values).
Origin
The point where the x-axis and y-axis intersect on a coordinate grid.
Ordered Pair
Two numbers in a specific order used to locate a point on a coordinate grid. They are usually written inside parentheses: (2,3). The horizontal coordinate x is given first; the vertical coordinate y is given second.
Area
The size of a surface measured in square units.
Square units
A unit used in area measurement.
Base
The surface that a solid object stands on.
The lowest part.
Face
A flat surface on a 3-dimensional shape.
Height
The shortest distance between the base and the side opposite the base.
Formula
A general rule for finding the value of something.
Rectangular Prism
A prism whose faces are all rectangles.
