Q

Identify and describe three different types of maintenance that can be used during the life of the stock control system. (6 marks)

A

adaptive maintenance (1st mark)
 will be needed if changes in working practices are identified in a review (1)
 or if there is an increase in the number of customers/employees (1)

Q

Describe perfective maintenance. (2 marks)

A

 altering the system to make it easier to use and to improve
performance (1)
 procedures may be re-written to reduce system response
time (1)
 user interface may be adapted to make a task easier to
perform (1)
 data may be restructured to reduce storage
requirements/search times (1).

Q

Identify and describe two different types of maintenance, giving an example for each. (6 marks)

A

adaptive maintenance (1)
 will be needed if changes in working practices are identified in a review(1).
Example:
 if there is an increase in the number of buyers/properties / to adapt the
system if new legislation concerning a business or organisation is introduced (1) to enable the system to operate with new hardware (1).
perfective maintenance (1)
 if new technology shows that the performance of the system could be improved (1). Example:
 improving speed of searches / adding shortcuts of often used items (1).
corrective maintenance (1)
 for fixing bugs / errors in the software (1). Example:
 if the system does not add up correctly / searches do not work (1).

3
Q

Describe the consequences of not maintaining a system. (4 marks)

A

External changes such as new taxes require systems to be updated to accommodate those changes. Not making the changes could result in an organisation not complying with the law which could lead to prosecution.

Any errors which are not fixed will persist and this could lead to the integrity of data being compromised meaning that accurate information is not produced by the system and wrong decisions could be made as a result of this.
