Q

how to increase photosynthesis efficeincy using crispr cas 9

A

Using CRISPR-Cas9 is to engineer crops that:
Bypass photorespiration (somewhat mimicking the function of C4 and CAM plants).
Maximise photosynthesis efficiency could be to target Rubisco’s function directly
Edit the function of chloroplasts to make them more efficient
Target stomata to reduce the impacts of water stress.
Theoretically, almost anything about the plant can be edited and changed with CRISPR-Cas9 to improve the agricultural industry.

Q

Steps to research the appropriateness of CRISPR-Cas9 to improve photosynthesis of a given crop

A

Understand the entire photosynthetic process of the target crop species.
In order to gain a solid understanding of the genome of the target crop and how specific genes contribute to photosynthesis and growth. Includes understanding the regulation of the photorespiration pathway.
Utilise high-level computers to model the photosynthetic pathway and identify inefficiencies.
Use CRISPR-Cas9 technologies to target and edit the genes responsible for the identified inefficiencies.
It is important to recognise that CRISPR-Cas9 technology is still relatively new and its applications must undergo rigorous checks to determine whether they adhere to Australian GMO standards and regulations before products being made available for public consumption.
