Describe residents’ associations:
In existence since the end of the 19th century, although most established when urban areas expanded in 1920s and 1930s
They focus on the generation of a community, as often built on greenfield sites
Example of a resident’s association:
Newcourt is an urban extension to the east of Exeter which will provide 3700 dwellings and 20 hectares of employment land – a community organisation has been established that influences the making of Newcourt through the view of residents
What matters are residents’ associations concerned with + examples?
Housing, community, and environmental matters
Eg traffic speeds in a neighbourhood, footpath maintenance, grass cutting
When are residents’ associations most active?
When a place can be identifies as having a distinctive character, such as a former village which is now part of a larger urban settlement
When are heritage associations most active?
When there is a distinguishing character based on the survival of past characteristics such as architecture
What category are most heritage sites?
NGOs
What scale do heritage associations range from?
From local scale such as groups focusing on a particular building or feature, to a national scale such as the National Trust
What is playing an increasing role in the evolution of places?
Digital placemaking – used to encourage public participation and collaboration in processes like planning and land-use
Example of digital placemaking approach:
‘The power of 10’ – places thrive when those using them have 10 reasons to be out and about
What does social media allow?
Allows people to share their individual reasons and an overall pattern of a place can be built up
