5.7: Echoes Flashcards
Reverberation
the persistence of sound for a longer period than normal
Sonar
system that uses ultrasound to detect underwater objects or depth of H20
Transmitter
device that gives out signal
Receiver
device that absorbs sound waves
Echolocation
process of finding out where something is via echoes
Sound can be reflected from surfaces which are:
large, smooth, and flat (glass, tiles, flat metal, concrete)
How can we reduce echoes?
- soft sound absorbing material
- curved surfaces
- heavy curtains
How do boats use sonar?
Ultrasound is sent by the transmitter and is reflected by the seabed. It is sent back to the boat by the receiver, and the time will be recorded to find the depth.
Why is sonar useful for fishermen?
To find large shoals, detect icebergs, and find the depth of the sea
