5.6.1 Photosynthesis & Respiration Flashcards
Where does photosynthesis occur?
In autotrophic organisms such as plants, algae, and cyanobacteria
What occurs in the process of photosynthesis?
Light energy is trapped and used to convert simple inorganic compounds into complex organic compounds. Energy is stored within these organic compounds
Where does respiration occur?
In all living organisms
What occurs in the process of respiration?
Energy is released from organic molecules in living cells. The process can be aerobic (oxygen) or anaerobic (no oxygen)
State 8 differences between photosynthesis and respiration
1)
Photosynthesis = stores energy
Aerobic/anaerobic respiration = releases energy
2)
Photosynthesis = occurs in chloroplasts
Aerobic respiration = occurs in mitochondria
Anaerobic respiration = occurs in cytoplasm
3)
Photosynthesis = coenzyme NADP
Aerobic/anaerobic respiration = coenzyme NAD is used
4)
Photosynthesis = requires light
Aerobic/anaerobic respiration = does not require light
5)
Photosynthesis = anabolic reaction (builds)
Aerobic/anaerobic respiration = catabolic reaction (breaks down)
6)
Photosynthesis = end products: oxygen and glucose
Aerobic respiration = end products: carbon dioxide and water
Anaerobic respiration = end products: lactate or ethanol
