5.6 Validity Flashcards
What does Validity refers to?
How accurately and precisely a measure assesses an attribute. It assumes the appropriateness of using a given measuring device for drawing inferences about the criteria.
For example, a given test may be highly valid for predicting an employee’s direct performance, but totally invalid for predicting attendance. In this case, it would be appropriate to use the predictor for making inferences about direct performance only, but not to predict the employee’s absenteeism.
Which types of validity are important in the selection and placement decisions?
empirical validity, content validity, and construct validity
Define Empirical (criterion) validity,
refers to how much a predictor relates to a criterion (measure of job success).
What does perfectly positive validity (+1) mean?
the two variables move in the same direction.
What doe sperfectly negative validity (-1) mean?
the two variables move in the opposite direction.
Define Content validity
It estimates or judges the relevance of a predictor as an indicator of performance, without collecting actual performance information- In essence, job-relatedness here is an estimation or judgment
To demonstrate content validity it is necessary to know, what?
the duties of the actual job and the individual KSAs needed to perform those duties.
Define Construct validity
Demonstrating that a relationship exists between a selection procedure and a psychological trait or measure (construct)
All of the following are types of validity mentioned in this section, except-
Content
Empirical
Construct
Discriminant
Discriminant
What does validity mean?
The consistency or stability of a selection instrument
Extent to which a measurement gives consistent results
How accurately a measure assesses an attribute
The accuracy and precision of measurements
How accurately a measure assesses an attribute
hich of the following definitions accurately defines content validity?
How closely a predictor relates to a criterion
Demonstrates a relationship exists between a selection procedure and a psychological trait or measure
How much a predictor relates to a measure of job success
How closely predictors that measure KSAs relate to those required on the actual job
How closely predictors that measure KSAs relate to those required on the actual job
True or False: It is necessary to know the duties of the actual job and the KSAs needed to perform those duties to demonstrate content validity when the predictor is related to a task of the job.
True
When the predictor is a skill related to a task that is actually part of the job, the duties of the actual job and the KSAs needed to perform those duties are necessary to demonstrate content validity. Content validity thus refers to predictors that measure KSAs related to those required on the actual job.
What does empirical validity encompass?
Estimates the relevance of a predictor as an indicator of performance
Measures whether apparently non-related concepts really are non-related
Refers to how much a predictor relates to a criterion
Demonstrates that a relationship exists between a selection procedure and a psychological measure
Refers to how much a predictor relates to a criterion
