5.4 b-lymphocytes & humoral immunity Flashcards
what does humoral immunity involve?
antibodies
what is clonal selection?
process of matching antigens on an antigen-presenting cell with antigen receptors on B & T lymphocytes
what do plasma cells do?
secrete antibodies into blood plasma + produce memory cells -> destroy antigen
which type of B cells control the primary immune response?
plasma cells
what do memory cells do?
circulate in blood & tissue fluid, divide & develop into plasma cells & more memory cells
which type of B cells controls the secondary immune response?
memory cells
what is different from the primary & secondary immune response?
long-term immunity; antibodies produced at faster rate & increased quantity
what is the role of B cells & how are they used? (7)
1) surface antigens are taken in by B cell
2) the cell processes the antigen & present it on its surface
3) helper T cells attach to processed antigens & activates B-cell
4) B-cell divide & give clones of plasma cells by mitosis
5) cloned plasma cells produces & secretes specific antibody that’s complementary to pathogen surface
6) antibodies attach & destroy pathogen
7) B-cells develop into memory cells
