5.4 Flashcards
What is cohesion?
Bonding between H2O molecules.
What is adhesion?
Bonding between H2O and other molecules.
What is a solvent?
A solution that dissolves solutes.
What is a specific heat?
Ability to resist change in temperature
What is a heat of vaporization?
Energy it takes for 1 g of a substance to evaporate.
What is concentration?
The amount of substance in an area.
What is pH
Potential Hydrogen
What is pOH?
Potential of Hydroxide
What is a hydroxide ion?
OH-
What is a hydronium ion?
H3O+
What is an acid?
A substance where H3O+ > OH-
What is a base?
A substance where H3O+ < OH-
What is a neutral?
A substance where H3O+ = OH-
What are the 5 properties of water?
Cohesion and adhesion, solubility, ice is less dense than water, high specific heat, heat of vaporization
What makes a solution an acid or a base?
If the pH is 1-6, its acidic, if it’s 8-14, its basic
What makes water a good solvent?
Polarity
What dissolves in water?
Hydrophilic substances, polar substances
How do ionic substances vs covalent substances dissolve in water?
Ionic substances’ molecules separate and covalent substances stay in molecules.
How is solubility of water important to living things?
It helps transport nutrients.
Why is ice more dense than water?
Ice’s hydrogen bonds are stable.
Why is ice being more dense than water important?
surface ice insulates water below and melted ice sinks and cycles nutrients
Why is a high specific heat of water important?
Water keeps the temperature nearby more stable.
Does the temperature change more on the coast or inland?
On the coast
Why is heat vaporization important?
To cool organisms.
The pH scale is in the power of what?
Ten
One solution has a pH of 3 and another of 5. What’s the relationship?
The first is 100 times more acidic.
One solution has a pH of 8 and another of 5. What’s the relationship?
The first is 1,000 times more basic.
One H3O+ has a power of -10 and the other -4, which is higher.
The second one, -4
Does acid or base increase in pH when diluted?
Acid
