5.3C Flashcards
What do storm hydrographs depend on
Physical features of drainage basin:
size, shape, drainage density rock type, soil, relief and vegetation
human factors:
land use and urbanisation
labels on a strom hydrograph?
rising limb, peak discharge, lag time, falling limb and peak rainfall
Define peak flow
The maximum discharge, delayed after maximum precipitation has
occurred.
Define lag time
The time delay between peak
rainfall and peak discharge
define falling limb
As the storm precipitation levels decrease, discharge will in turn decrease over time
Define rising limb
The increase of river discharge, not necessarily instantaneously
after precipitation.
Define base flow
the contribution to river flow from long term storage sources such as permeable rock, areas of bog and marsh and peat covered moorlads
define bankfull discharge
a river’s water level reaches the top of its channel (any more water and flooding occurs)
define approach segment
shows the discharge of the river before the storm
define storm run off
part of river flow derived from immediate rainfall event (most rapid water trasnfer is through overland and via throughflow)
check out pmt detailed notes for factors affecting storm hydrograph
page 9 and onenote page in water secrtion
Describe a flashy hydrograph
Short lag time
High peak
Steep rising limb
Describe subdued storm hydrograph
Long lag time
Low peak
Gently sloping rising limb
