- Presynaptic knob
- Synaptic cleft
- Postsynaptic membrane

• Neurotransmitters released via vesicles from presynaptic knob
• Through the presynaptic membrane
• Diffuse across synaptic cleft and bind with molecules on post synaptic membrane
• Stimulates post synaptic neurone to generate an electrical impulse
• Neurotransmitters recycled or destroyed
