5.3 Wired Network Troubleshooting Flashcards
Attenuation
Loss of intensity as signal moves through a medium
What is the measurement for signal strength
Decibels (dB)
dB loss symptoms and how to test?
No connectivity/ intermittent connectivity/ poor performance (signal too weak, CRC errors, data corruption)
Solution: test each connection/test distance and signal loss)
Latency
a delay between the request and the response
Jitter
when there is a time delay in the sending of these data packets over your network connection.
Jitter troubleshooting
- confirm available bandwidth
- make sure the infrastructure is working
- Apply QoS (quality of service)
- prioritize real-time communication services
Crosstalk (XT)
Signal on one circuit affects another circuit
Near End Crosstalk (NEXT)
interference measured at the transmitting end
Far End Crosstalk (FEXT)
interference measured away from the transmitter
Crosstalk (XT) troubleshooting
- check the wires (use your crimp)
- maintain twists
- Increase distance between pairs by using Category 6A cables
- test and certify installation
What is an Open Circuit?
a break in the connection
What is a short circuit?
2 connections are touching
Troubleshooting Open/Short Circuits
- replace the cable with the short or open
2. advanced troubleshooting with Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR)
Troubleshooting pin-outs
- test cables prior to implementation
2. hire a good cable person
Troubleshooting: Incorrect Cable Types
- Check layer 1 (hardware)
- check the outside of the cables
- confirm the cable specifications with a TDR
