5.3 The Green Revolution + 5.4 Impacts of Agricultural Practices Flashcards
Green Revolution
The Green Revolution refers to a period of significant agricultural advancements in the mid-20th century that aimed to increase food production through the use of modern farming techniques, such as the adoption of high-yielding crop varieties, improved irrigation systems, and increased use of fertilizers and pesticides.
Agricultural Practices
Agricultural practices refer to various activities carried out by farmers in order to produce food, fiber, and other agricultural products. These practices include planting, harvesting, fertilizing, pest control measures, and crop rotation.
Petroleum-based Fuels
Petroleum-based fuels, also known as fossil fuels, are energy sources derived from the remains of ancient plants and animals. These fuels include gasoline, diesel, and natural gas, and they are primarily used for transportation, electricity generation, and heating
Slash and Burn
Slash and burn is an agricultural technique where vegetation is cut down and burned to clear land for farming. The ashes from the burned vegetation provide nutrients to the soil, allowing crops to be grown temporarily.
Tilling
Tilling, or plowing, digs and turns up clumps of soil. This helps to add permeability to soil by loosening it, which allows water, air, and nutrients to get through. This soil becomes susceptible to runoff and its microbes are disturbed, which means the most nutritionally valuable soil is lost to the ocean or other waterways. Soil erosion is only exacerbated by this technique.
Fertilizer
Fertilizer is a substance that is added to soil or plants to provide essential nutrients for growth. It helps plants grow faster and produce more fruits or flowers.
Herbicides
Herbicides are chemicals used to kill or control unwanted plants, also known as weeds. They work by disrupting the growth and development of plants, ultimately leading to their death.
Insecticides
Insecticides are chemicals designed to kill or control insects. They are used to protect crops from insect damage and prevent the spread of diseases carried by insects.
Rodenticides
Rodenticides are substances used for killing or controlling rodents such as rats and mice. They come in various forms such as baits or pellets and are employed to reduce rodent populations in both residential and agricultural settings.
