5.3 - Salts Flashcards
Acid + Base —>
Salt + Water
How do we make SOLUBLE salts?
neutralising acids and crystallising the resulting solution
Method of making a soluble salt - INSOLUBLE BASE METHOD
- heat acid (e.g. HCl)
- add base while stirring
- filter out excess base
- crystallisation - heat salt solution, allow to cool, filter out crystals, dab dry with filter paper
INSOLUBLE BASE METHOD - 1. what is the purpose of heating the acid?
more energy - reacts faster with base
INSOLUBLE BASE METHOD - 2. what is the purpose of stirring the base when adding it to the acid?
guarantees base is in EXCESS - all acid has been used up
CRYSALLISATION - 1. what is the purpose of heating the salt solution?
causes solution to become saturated
CRYSTALLISATION - 2. what is the purpose of allowing the solution to cool for a few days?
lowers solubility of salt - so solid crystals form
CRYSTALLISATION - 4. what is the purpose of drying the crystals with filter paper?
remove last traces of water from crystals
What is a precipitate?
an insoluble solid that forms inside a solution
How do we make insoluble salts?
by precipitation
Making salts by precipitation method (insoluble salts)
- mix 2 solutions together
- filter out salt precipitate
- rinse residue (salt) with water
- dry salt by dabbing with filter paper
