5.3 New and Useful Polymers Flashcards
Why do we want to design new polymers?
To make materials with our desires properties for particular jobs
Name a useful polymer for dentists and why it is useful
- new polymers used instead of fillings because the mercury in the fillings is hazardous for dentists
- used as a new softer lining for dentures
What type of polymers can be used in plasters?
Light sensitive polymers become less sticky when exposed to light to peels off easily
What are hydrogels?
Polymers that can trap water due to their few cross linking units between the chains
Name a use of hydrogels and why
- use them as dressings for wounds, they allow the wound to heal in moist, sterile conditions
- soft contact lenses
What is a shape memory polymer?
A polymer that can change back to their original shape when temperature or other conditions are changed
What is a smart polymer?
A polymer that may have their properties changed by light, temperature or other changes in their surroundings
Give 2 examples of smart polymers
- light sensitive
* shape memory
Give an example of a shape memory polymer
A material used for stitching wounds that changes shape when heated to body temperature. They are stitched loosely and the temperature of the body causes the thread to tighten and close the wound, applying the right amount of force
Why do we coat the fibres used to make fabrics in polymers?
To make them waterproof and breathable
Name 2 things we can make using recycled polymers
- clothing
* the filling for pillows and duvets
What type of material can we recycle in order to reuse their polymers?
Plastics, like drink bottles
Give 2 medical and 2 non medical uses of polymers
Medical:
•light sensitive plasters
•shape memory polymers for dressings
•dental fillings
Non medical:
•packaging material
•clothing
•filling for pillows and duvets
Name 3 possible industries that would be interested in using new and useful polymers
- clothing
- packaging
- medical applications
