5.3 Human Population Growth Flashcards
The human populaton (like popuation of other organisms) tends to:
increase, the rate of that increase has dramatically changed over time
For most of human existence the populaton grew
slowly because life was harsh, as civilizaton advanced life became easier and human population began to grow more rapidly (lower death rates but high birth rates)
Thomas Mathus said
human population regulated by war (competition), famine (limited resources), and disease (parasitism)
Exponential growth continued up to the:
2nd half of the 20th century, peak advanced in 1962-63 then began to drop, still growing rapidly but slowing down
demography:
the study of human populations
why do some countires have high growth rates while others grow more slowly?
birthrates, death rates, and age structure of a population help predict why
demographic transition:
a dramatic change from high birthrate/deathrate to low birth/death rates
3 stages of demographic tranisition
1) birth and death rate are equaly high
2) death rate begins falling, birth rate remains high
3) birthrate fals to meet death rate

demography includes
human population size, density, distribution, movement
the bubonic plague (black plauge)
killed 30-60% of entire population of Europe in 1347 (75 million and 200 million)
pandemic (Ebola epidemic 2014-17 west Africa- fatality rate 70%)

Population density formula
PD= N/A (n= population, a= area (uit squared))
