5.2.1 Lattice Enthalpy Flashcards
Define standard enthalpy of neutralisation
the enthalpy change when solutions of an acid and an alkali react together under standard conditions to produce 1 mole of water
Define standard enthalpy of formation
The enthalpy change which occurs when one mole of the compound is formed from its elements under standard conditions, and with everything in its standard state.
Define standard enthalpy of Combustion
The enthalpy change which occurs when one mole of the compound is burned completely in oxygen under standard conditions, and with everything in its standard state.
Define standard enthalpy of solution
The amount of heat that is released or absorbed during the dissolving process (at constant pressure).
Define standard enthalpy of hydraton
The enthalpy change when 1 mole of gaseous ions dissolve in sufficient water to give an infinitely dilute solution. Hydration enthalpies are always negative.
Define First ionisation energy
The energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms to produce one mole of gaseous 1+ ions
Define second ionisation energy
The energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous 1+ ions to produce 1 mole of 2+ ions
