5.2 Phagocytosis Flashcards
What are the two type of white blood cells
.Phagocytes
. Lymphocytes
What is the role of phagocytes
. To ingest and destroy the pathogen before it can cause harm
They provide an important defence against pathogens that manage to enter the body
Describe step 1 of phagocytosis
. The phagocyte is attracted to the pathogen by chemical products of the pathogen.
It moves towards it along a concentration gradient
Describe step 2 of phagocytosis
The phagocyte has several receptors on its cell surface membrane that attach to chemicals on the surface of the pathogen
Describe step 3 of phagocytosis
. The phagocyte engulfs the pathogen to form a vesicle called a phagosome
Lysosomes within the phagocyte migrate towards the phagosome
Describe step 5 of phagocytosis
. The lysosomes contain enzymes called lysozymes, and they release these enzymes into the phagosome which destroy the ingested bacteria/pathogen by hydrolysis of their cell walls
What is step 6 of phagocytosis
The soluble products from the breakdown of the pathogen are absorbed into the cytoplasm of the phagocyte
